Romero pips Jacobson

Argentina’s Eduardo Romero became the third oldest winner in European tour history today.

Romero, 48 this coming Wednesday, beat Swede Fredrik Jacobson with a birdie at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off in the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

The pair had tied on the 11-under-par mark of 273, Jacobson having missed a putt of under three feet on the 17th when one ahead.

It was the 27-year-old’s sixth runners-up finish - and he has still to win.

Romero, who holed a seven-foot putt to win the £366,660 first prize, also becomes only the fifth non-European to earn more than £4m on the circuit.

Kent’s Roger Chapman and South African Tim Clark finished joint third, Chapman after double-bogeying the 17th. Justin Rose was a further shot back in fifth spot.
