Lee Westwood has withdrawn from the Compass Group English Open after only five holes.

Westwood, who opened with a bogey, managed to birdie the third and fourth but then made the decision to quit. "I got pins and needles in my left arm," he said.

"I've had it for about four days now. It's a bit into my shoulder, and I've a pain in my elbow too.

"I'm finding it difficult to grip the club with my little finger. I can't really hold it as I'm trying to release and as a result I can't square the club properly.

"It means you've got no confidence to hit the ball.

"The rough round here is brutal as well, so if you start missing fairways and have to hit it out of that then it's going to make it worse."
