Irishman Gary Murphy carded a 64, including nine birdies, to lead after the first round of the Austrian Open at Murhof.

The 29-year-old from Kilkenny is two strokes clear of a group of seven players including five Britons, Tim Milford from Kent, Scotland's Scott Drummond, Garmany-based Gary Birch Jnr, and brothers Jamie and Sam Little from Hertfordshire.

Murphy began his round at the 10th tee and prised six birdies from the course for an outward 30. He added three more on his back nine to be home in 34.

The Irishman has been playing solid golf without holing the putts and finished tied seventh last week in the Challenge de Espana in Spain.

Simon Wakefield, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Dorset's Lee James, first and second on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit, both went round in 70.
