Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance will be a special match observer during the upcoming Seve Trophy contest between teams representing Great Britain and Ireland and Continental Europe at Druids Glen, Co Wicklow, April 19-21.

Torrance will be studying closely the form and teamplay of key members of his European Ryder Cup team due to play against the United States in September - including three outstanding Irishmen, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley.

"The Seve Trophy event gives me a great opportunity to look at the various pairings and how they might work out for the team later in the year," said Sam.

"It also provides those players who have made the Ryder Cup team with the ideal preparation for the contest with the Americans and I'm delighted to see them gain this kind of experience alongside a fierce competitor like Seve."

The inaugural Seve Trophy event was staged at Sunningdale, England in April 2000, when Seve inspired an amazing single point victory for Continental Europe by defeating Colin Montgomerie 2-1 in the top singles match on the last day.

Unlike the Ryder Cup tradition, the Seve Trophy 2002 event offers prize money to all those taking part, with a total of €2.4m shared amongst the two teams.
