Golf: English pair keep tabs on Goosen
English rookie Shaun Webster and his compatriot Mark Roe ensured defending champion Retief Goosen did not have things his own way at the Lancome Trophy.
Goosen resumed after two 30-minute fog delays with a two-stroke lead, but was soon caught by Roe and overtaken by Webster.
The latter is a lowly 167th on the Order of Merit this season - more than £1.3million behind number one Goosen - but he had a sparkling outward half of 31.
Webster birdied the third and fifth, eagled the 522-yard next and then birdied the long eighth to reach nine under par.
Roe was worried about whether he could continue after suffering an instant reaction to a wasp sting on the penultimate hole of his first-round 66 - but after a night's sleep he was relieved to discover the swelling had not increased and gone into his hand.
He resumed with a 20-foot birdie putt and then added another on the short third. At seven under 38-year-old Roe was up to joint second.
Goosen also set off again with a 20-foot putt - in his case at the 10th - but bogeyed the 15th and after another birdie at the 17th dropped another shot on the last to fall back alongside Roe again.
Colin Montgomerie was playing with Goosen but was involved in a struggle just to survive the halfway cut following his opening 75.
The Scot probably needed a 67 at worst. Birdies at the 11th and 12th raised his hopes, but after parring the next four he bogeyed the 17th and returned to three over.
Roe had his third birdie of the day on the sixth and when Webster bogeyed the 467-yard 14th they were level at eight under.
Goosen was two behind after bogeying the third and shared third place with Salisbury's Gary Emerson, while Montgomerie birdied the same hole and at two over almost certainly had to find two more birdies to have a chance of qualifying.
