Golf: McCartan pulls off shock in girls intermediates

Eilish McCartan from Greenore pulled off a major shock at Belvoir Park yesterday in the Irish Girls' Intermediate Championship.

McCartan defeated new Ulster senior interpro cap Joanne Black from Knock by one hole in the semi-finals and will clash with Dunmurry member Jill McAuley in this morning's final.

Black, a semi-finalists recently in the North West Senior Scratch Cup, was a short-priced candidate to take the Irish title but McCartan proved her worth in the blustery sunshine.

McAuley is also an Ulster senior interpro and she reached the semi-finals of the Ulster Championship at Lisburn before losing to English international Fiona Brown.

McAuley fought off the challenge of Leinster senior player Fiona Healy, winning with a birdie three at the first tie-hole. This morning's final will tee-off at 9 o'clock.
