Sottish Open: Goosen's fine form continues

South African Retief Goosen continued his excellent form to equal his own course record of 62 in the first round of the £2.2m Scottish Open.

Preferred lies were in operation because of the rain which forced a four-hour delay at the start of the day, but it was still a supreme effort from a man whose confidence has gone through the roof.

"I'm starting to believe I have the potential to play great," said the 32-year-old, who prior to Tulsa last month had never finished higher than 10th in any major.

The hold-up meant all 156 players were unable to complete their 18 holes today, but as the late starters made as much progress as they could before nightfall, Goosen held a three-stroke lead over New Zealander Elliot Boult and Australian Jarrod Moseley.

He was also seven clear of tournament favourite Sergio Garcia, whose 62 in 1999 was also achieved with placing allowed on saturated fairways, eight in front of Colin Montgomerie and 10 ahead of Lee Westwood, whose slump continues.
