Golf: Paul the leading qualifer in N of I C'ships

Stuart Paul from Tandragee shot a super 67 on the Dunluce course today to be

the leading qualifier in the Carlsberg North of Ireland Amateur Championship at

Portrush.

The +2 handicapper collects the silver medal for the first time after

playing in the tournament for 10 years.

An eagle three at the 18th hole highlighted his card and he also made 4 birdies

with just one dropped shot in a superb round.

He led the 61 qualifiers into the shoot-out stage by one stroke from Birr +1

player Justin Kehoe.

The 61 qualifiers are joined in the matchplay by Graeme McDowell, the new

Walker Cup captain, Tim Rice and Michael McDermott, who didn’t have to

qualify because of playing with Ireland in the European Team C’ship at the

weekend.

Meanwhile, Philip Walton's Dundrum House Pro-Am at Co Tipperary is lead overnight by John Kelly from the Ward club in Dublin.

Kelly returned a 2 under par 70 to be one shot clear of Ulster champion Phil

Collins, while host Walton made a 75.

The competition will be completed tomorrow.
