Colin Montgomerie, a twice-winner of the Championship turned in a spectacular performance to take the overnight lead with an eight-under-par 63.

Monty made five birdies on his way to the turn but also bogeyed the eighth hole.

He then eagled the long tenth hole, from 30 feet and had a birdie at the 11th to move to seven-under-par.

A bogey five at the 16th hole, where he was in the bunker, stopped his run but the big Scot finished in startling fashion with his second eagle three at the last hole where he hit a five-iron approach to four feet and rolled in the putt.
