Golf: Oldcorn is golfer of the month
Andrew Oldcorn, joint overnight leader in the Compass Group English Open, has been named as the European tour’s Asprey and Garrard golfer of the month for May.
The award is for 41-year-old Oldcorn’s £333,330 victory in the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth, the tour’s flagship event.
‘‘The win was a dream come true and I’m delighted to have won this honour in a month when the roll-call of champions included Jose Maria Olazabal, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia and Thomas Levet,’’ he said before resuming at the Forest of Arden alongside Australian Adam Scott on five under par.
‘‘I said at the time that my victory was a testament to the strength and depth of the European tour and that I hoped it would provide inspiration to a lot of other players.
‘‘Well, Thomas certainly grasped the baton at the Victor Chandler British Masters last week.’’
Oldcorn, who finished two ahead of Angel Cabrera and three in front of Nick Faldo, earns a £1,000 charity donation to the Golf Foundation.
