Golf: Westwood frustrated at Wentworth
Lee Westwood's frustration boiled over as his hopes of surviving the halfway cut suffered a nosedive in the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth.
Already one over par overnight after a first-round 73 which he described as a mixture of "rubbish and really rubbish", Westwood resumed by bogeying the first three holes.
Last year's European number one angrily swished his club after his drive at the third leaked into the rough and then lashed out with his foot as well before trudging down the fairway to try to repair the damage.
He failed in that just as he failed to get up and down from short of the first green, and just as he failed to save par at the second after his tee shot spun down the slope in front of the green.
Westwood actually hit a superb chip to within three feet of the flag there, but missed the putt.
At four-over-par he was a massive 13 shots behind leader Angel Cabrera - a late starter following his course record-equalling 63 - and probably needed to play the remaining 14 holes in four under to qualify for the final two rounds of the ÂŁ2million championship - the one in which he was joint second last year, but has never won.
Colin Montgomerie, the man who beat him 12 months ago and was also the PGA champion in 1998 and 1999, was perilously placed at one over as well overnight after running up a triple bogey eight on the 17th.
But the Scot got off to a much better start. After salvaging his par on the first with a seven-foot putt after also coming up short, he almost hit the hole with his tee shot to the 155-yard second and made his two to improve to level par.
