Seamus Power takes giant leap to securing PGA Tour card

Seamus Power took a giant leap towards securing his PGA Tour card for next season when he became Ireland’s first winner of a www.Web.com Tour event in the US on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old West Waterford golfer won the United Leasing and Finance Championship on the PGA Tour’s equivalent of Europe’s Challenge Tour after the third-round leaders failed to match the 12-under-par target he had set with a closing bogey-free, five-under 67 at Victoria National in Indiana.

It was enough for Power to win by a shot from US trio Cody Gribble, Adam Schenk, and Jonathan Randolph to claim a winner’s cheque for $108,000 (€93,950) and leap to number seven on the Web.com Tour money list.

His season’s earnings to date of $131,733 (€114,310) mean he is just $30,000 (€26,000) short of the figure needed last season to secure a top-25 finish and with it a PGA Tour card.

“That’s where you’re trying to get,” Power told www.PGATour.com

“If I didn’t see myself doing that, there wouldn’t be a point in playing. This is a huge win, but at the same time, it’s a stepping stone for where I’m trying to be. But it’s a huge step, so I’m excited.”
