A Waterford master golf clubmaker, one of just nine award winners worldwide to be recognised by the International Clubmaker Guild (ICG) in December, believes amateur golfers change their clubs too often.

Peter Doyle, who owns Precision Fit Golf at the Newtown Golf Range in Tramore, believes amatuer players fall into the trap of aping the professionals, who change clubs purely for commercial reasons.

“If you look at the top professional golfers, they are changing their clubs every 12 months or so, but if you look down the ranks at the journeymen pros on the European Tour they play with the same clubs and play consistently well for three and four years,” says Doyle.
