At Rosses Point in 1953, they completed the Irish Senior Cup-Barton Shield double with a celebrated group of players that included internationals Mick Power and Larry McCarthy.
The cupboard at senior level has been a little bare ever since, but having come through the closing stages of the Munster Barton Shield qualifiers at Shannon on Saturday at the expense of Ballybunion and Dungarvan, they are again through to the national finals at Carton House next month.
Niall Gorey and Dave O’Donovan could afford to lose the last two holes in the decider against Dungarvan’s Kevin Stack and John Reynolds and still have enough in hand to see the quartet, completed by Daniel Hallissey and John Waldron, safely through to Carton.
Gorey has starred for both Munster and Ireland during his time in Cork and also reached the final of the West of Ireland on two occasions and captured the Munster Stroke Play Championship at Little Island three times. He has now returned to Dublin working for MMI, the company that manufactures the medals for the Golfing Union of Ireland.
“The one thing I don’t have is a gold medal and I suppose I could always slip one in my pocket at work,” he jokes. “Seriously, though, I would love to win a medal with a great bunch of guys at Muskerry and that’s why I continue to play for a terrific club.”
Dungarvan’s near neighbours West Waterford suffered acute disappointment in the Junior Cup when beaten 3-2 by Castletroy in a very tight decider. West Waterford looked good early on, with James O’Connor and Owen O’Leary claiming the first two points, before the Castletroy tail wagged in style and Keith Bermingham won on the 18th and Brendan Reidy and Michael Murphy on the 17th to set the Limerick club on course to repeat their only previous national triumph back in 1972.
