McSherry fifth at Young Masters

Irish teenager Niamh McSherry finished a highly-creditable fifth in the girls event at the European Young Masters in Hamburg.

The Lurgan girl, who was always in the running, finished with a two over par 73 for a 54-hole total of 215 — six strokes behind winner Alexandra Forsterling of Germany who was four clear of runner-up, Spaniard Alejandra Pasarin.

The other Irish girl, Julie McCarthy from Forrest Little, ended in 46th place.

In the boys’ contest, Waterford’s Michael Cooke was 37th and Jordan Logue of Hilton Templepatrick 45th. The winner was Max Schmitt of Germany on 12 under par.

In the European Ladies Amateur Championship in Estonia, Paula Grant of Lisburn closed with a 73 and a tie for 44th place.

The championship was won by Spaniard Luna Sobron who clinched the title on the eighth hole of a sudden-death play-off with Naomi Jimezez after both had finished with 72-hole aggregates of 278.
