Ireland finish Euros with a flourish in Denmark

Ireland finally produced their best golf in the European Team Championship week, winning their final matches in all four tournaments.

They beat Germany 4-1 in the Amateur team championship at Silkeborg in Denmark to finish in seventh place.

Paul Dunne and Jack Hume got them off to a flyer with a last-green foursomes victory and then Rory McNamara and Gavin Moynihan both collected points with 17th green triumphs.

With the tie effectively over, Reeve Whitson and Kevin Phelan were deemed to have halved their games.

England won the title by beating old rivals Scotland in the final.

In the Boys’ championship at Murcar in Scotland the Irish finished a highly creditable fifth by beating Denmark 3-2.

Sean Flanagan and Alec Myles won their foursomes with Robin Dawson and James Sugrue also securing points to see them home while France won the title with victory over Norway.

In the women’s championship at Fulford in York, Ireland defeated Scotland 3-2 on Saturday to end up in 11th spot. The Maguire twins, Leona and Lisa, collected the foursomes point while in-form Stephanie Meadow and Irish champion Paula Grant won their singles.

Austria won the women’s crown with a shock defeat of Spain in the final.

Ireland also came 11th in the girls’ tournament at Linkoping in Sweden after beating Denmark 3½-1½ in their final match.

Points came from Chloe Weir and Niamh McSherry in the foursomes, Olivia Mehaffey and Mary Doyle. Sweden beat France in final.
