Watson confident North can point way to Ryder Cup win

Europe have won seven of the last nine Ryder Cups, including last year’s ’Miracle at Medinah’ when they came from 10-6 down on the final day in Chicago.

That prompted the PGA of America to call on 1993 winning captain Watson to lead the side at Gleneagles next year and the five-time Open champion yesterday revealed he had asked fellow 63-year-old North to be his first vice-captain.

“I’m certainly happy to have him on my side and in my ear and helping me bring the cup back from Europe this time,” Watson said at the Greenbrier Classic. “It’s been way too long. It’s time to change the tide.”
