Route 66 for Charles

At age 76, Bob Charles added another chapter to his legend at the European Senior Tour’s PGA Open by beating his age by an incredible 10 strokes to move into a share of third place on four under par.

Charles’s first round 66 — bettering his previous Senior Tour record of 71 sees the New Zealander — the first left-hander to win a Major at the 1963 British Open — join Ireland’s Des Smyth and four others in a six-way tie for third, two strokes behind leader David J Russell. Charles played alongside another 76 year old legend, Gary Player, who posted a 72.
