Lawrie books US Open ticket

Peter Lawrie has continued his superb Surrey form in qualifying for next month’s US Open in San Francisco.

Lawrie will now join Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Pádraig Harrington in the event starting June 14 on the Olympic course.

Lawrie had to do it the hard way through a five man play-off for four places after he finished tied on six under par with Italy’s Matteo Manassero, England’s Matthew Baldwin, Frenchman Rafael Jacquelin and Korean Shirwan Kim. It was Kim who bowed out with a bogey at the second extra play off hole.

Sweden’s Alex Noren (67 and 68) and Scotland’s Marc Warren (70 and 65) finished the leading qualifiers at nine under par.

Shane Lowry missed out after posting scores of 72 and 70 for a two under par tally as did Gary Murphy with rounds of 73 and 71 for a level par tally.
