IRELAND won the Men’s Senior Home International Championship for an unprecedented fourth successive year at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire yesterday and completed the Triple Crown with a 7-2 trouncing of England.

In the end it was comfortable, but at one stage in the afternoon, when the English led in four singles, a nail-biting finish appeared in store – this Irish achievement to win in all four countries is quite remarkable

Ireland made the perfect start to the final day of the round-robin series when they dominated the foursomes and were 2½-½ up at lunch. Maurice Kelly and Adrian Morrow, two of the most experienced seniors in the country got the Irish off to a flyer, beating Charles Banks and Alan Squires 4&3 and they were followed into the winners enclosure by former Walker Cup captain Garth McGimpsey and Arthur Pierse.
