RORY McILROY’S outstanding4th place in the HSBC-WorldGolf Championship in Shanghai at the weekend has moved him to within touching distance of a Ryder Cup debut at Celtic Manor next October.

He lies 4th in the World Points list behind Lee Westwood, Pádraig Harrington and Simon Dyson and 3rd in the European table, hot on the heels of Westwood and Dyson.

Furthermore, he has improved one spot in the world rankings and now heads for this week’s $2.5m (€1.6m) Hong Kong Open in second place, 52,321 points behind Westwood in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai order of merit.
