McGinley edges closer to Ryder role

PAUL McGINLEY looks to be one step nearer becoming Ryder Cup captain – probably at Gleneagles in 2014 – after being named yesterday to lead Britain and Ireland against Continental Europe in Paris in September.

The event previously known as the Seve Trophy has a new sponsor and will be called the Vivendi Trophy with Seve Ballesteros.

Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros, in whose honour the event was launched in 2000, were the two captains when it was last staged in Ireland two years ago.
