Pepper’s comments flavour Solheim Cup victory for USA
Pepper now works as a television commentator but thought her microphone was off, when she criticised Laura Diaz and Sherri Steinhauer over the way they finished one of the foursomes matches on Saturday.
King, who captained the United States to a 16-12 win over Europe with a storming display in the concluding singles, said: “My opinion is that it’s about the team and not Dottie. I don’t think her comments had anything to do with how this team played — let’s change the subject.
“But I am retired (like Pepper), and usually you retire when you can’t play any more.
“That’s why you are commentating — because you are past your prime. It’s that old thing — the older you get the better you used to be.
“I don’t know. I am getting myself in trouble.”
From two points down after losing the fourballs 3-1 and Scot Catriona Matthew’s win over Diaz in the top game, the United States came storming back to take the session eight-and-a-half to three-and-a-half and the match 16-12.
They now lead the series 7-3, but this was only the second time Europe have been beaten at home and, just like St Pierre in Wales 11 years ago, all the good work done in the foursomes and fourballs was then undone.
Europe captain Helen Alfredsson said: “I felt everybody was playing well, but the Americans played better and made more putts.
“I don’t know if I could have done things that much different. It comes down to the golf, and you have to give the Americans credit. They did what they had to do – and we didn’t.
“But it was an amazing week to see these girls fight. They put a lot of heart and soul into it.”
Sorenstam, wearing a wig in the Swedish colours, added: “We fought to the end, and this week has been great in so many ways. Sometimes you can’t look at the score and decide whether it was good or bad.
“It would have been nice to bring home the cup — and we gave it our best.”
