Harrington and Clarke well in the hunt after solid openers

PAUL McGINLEY and Rory McIlroy set the benchmark for the seven strong Irish contingent at Carnoustie yesterday with rounds of 67 and 68.

But it was also a very encouraging day for Padraig Harrington, 69, and Darren Clarke who hit back from four over after six to bring in a very creditable 72.

Harrington dropped an early shot at the 2nd but reeled off a succession of pars before birdies at the 9th, 13th and 14th moved him to a share of 8th at the end of the day and four behind pacesetter Sergio Garcia.
