Superb McNamara helps Limerick to victory

A SUPERB display by Cian McNamara, winner of the Junior Open Championship at Musselborough, and a new cap on the Irish Boys Team, helped Limerick Golf Club to victory in the Munster semi-final and final of the Fred Daly Trophy at Roscrea.

In the semi-final he produced a birdie, birdie finish to defeat Bandon No 1 Kenny McGarry. McGarry came from three behind to square the match on the 15th.

Despite going 1 down on 17 after McNamara rolled in the birdie, McGarry hit his pitch to 5 feet at the next, but McNamara once again rolled in the birdie putt from 10 feet to clinch the match.

The afternoon final saw McNamara pitted against fellow Boy International Clancy Bowe of Tramore. In a see-saw match, which saw McNamara edge in front by a three-hole margin, wins at 14 and 15 gave Bowe a glimmer of hope, but McNamara’s birdie on the 16th and his safe two putts on the par three 17th ended Clancy’s hope of victory.

McNamara and his Limerick team-mates will now try for the elusive double of Fred Daly and Smurfit Junior Foursomes, when he leads his side in the semi-final of the latter against Douglas.
