THE Government is "moving in the direction" of ordering free-to-air TV coverage of this year's Ryder Cup golf competition at the K Club in Co Kildare.

The Cabinet yesterday discussed the issue at its weekly meeting.

The Irish Examiner understands that there is a growing view within Government that the tournament between the US and Europe will be a major showcase for Ireland and should be available free to terrestrial television viewers in Ireland.
