THE RAIN may have fallen heavily at times but nothing could have dampened the spirits or spoiled the enjoyment of the hundreds of people who watched yesterday’s Special Olympics golf finals at Portmarnock Links.

Winners and losers alike entered into the spirit of the occasion and many a tear was shed as Auld Lang Syne rang out and men and women, boys and girls, from all over the world who had become close friends during the previous four days said their goodbyes.

Emotional, yes. Uplifting, even more so. There were no losers this week even if a number of competitors departed their respective venues with their gold, silver and bronze medals.
