But when it came to the crunch, the game's greatest crumbled on Herb Kohler's hybrid links-parkland lay-out on the shores of Lake Michigan with the champion having to wait until the play-off to register his first birdie of the day.

Justin Leonard, one of two runners- up, closed with a 75 and Chris DiMarco, the other to bow out in extra time, produced the best golf of the three to come through the field with a 71.
