Cork Premier JHC semi-final: Kilshannig 2-24 Argideen Rangers 0-15

Kilshannig have booked a place in the Cork Premier JHC decider after they ran riot by 15 points against Argideen Rangers in Coachford on Sunday.

The Glantane men were essentially out of sight after five minutes of the second half, having already put on a scintillating display of hurling in a first half that had them ten to the good at the short whistle - and that was with seven wides to their name.

A late first-half flurry from Jack Twomey, that included a well-taken first-time goal and an additional two points, broke Argideen spirits. Up until that point, the Timoleague contingent had been keeping tabs on their opponents if not only for the efforts of their dead ball specialist Phillip Flynn.

Damien Murphy and Andy Hourigan got things up and running for Kilshanning with a couple of scores in the opening three minutes of play. Darragh O’Donovan put Argideen’s first score on the board with a point from inside his own half a minute later.

The first green flag was raised eight minutes in, Kilshannig half-forward Tom Cunningham finding Diarmuid O’Sullivan in space allowing the full forward to smash it low into the net, giving keeper Daniel Hurley no chance.

Hourigan pointed again less than a minute later to extend the early Kilshanning lead to six. Goalscorer O’Sullivan sandwiched another point between two Argideen scores, midfielder Charlie Twomey scoring with ease off his favoured right side before Sean Murray’s towering effort from the dead ball found its way over.

Argideen talisman and free-taker Flynn was keeping his side in the fight. Three points from the corner forward in a six-minute period plus an additional from James Crowley had the Carbery crew just three back with six minutes of the half to play (1-7 to 0-7 to Kilshannig).

But it was as close as they’d come to reigning in their opponents. Flynn would place another over from a free to add to his tally before the break but it did little to affect proceedings, with Kilshanning powering into a ten point lead in first half injury time courtesy of the brothers Twomey.

Jack Twomey reacted fastest in a scramble near the goalmouth, smashing it home first time before Kieran Twomey pointed unmarked seconds later. Two quick fire Jack Twomey points and a referee’s whistle later, things were looking poorly for Argideen.

It was tit-for-tat in the early stages of the second stanza but that mountain to climb became considerably steeper for Argideen when Kilshanning strung four excellent scores together between the 39th and 46th minute thanks to Hourigan, Kieran Twomey, Paddy Walsh and substitute Ryan Crowley (2-18 to 0-10 to Kilshannig).

By this juncture it was one-way traffic.

James Crowley pulled one back for Argideen before another three-point flurry - one each for the Twomeys and a Paddy Walsh free. The sides traded scores down the stretch and Argideen bust a gut till the end, but it was too little too late.

Pat Murphy’s men will take on St Catherine’s in the final, who were scintillating in their own semi-final win over Barryroe.
