Preview: Limerick’s hurling heroes ready for club battle as senior championship begins

As another thrilling Limerick Senior Hurling Championship gets underway, reigning champions Na Piarsaigh begin their quest for a remarkable tenth county title since 2011 when they face Kilmallock on Thursday evening.
Na Piarsaigh once again boast an impressive blend of inter-county quality and championship experience. Limerick stalwart William O'Donoghue, alongside brothers Peter and Mike Casey, will be key figures for Shane O'Neill's side.
James Finn and Vince Harrington add further depth, while veterans Shane Dowling, Daithi Dempsey and Kevin Downes continue to provide invaluable leadership and know-how. With such a wealth of talent at their disposal, the Caherdavin club will start the campaign as one of the leading contenders for the Daly Cup.
Kilmallock, however, possess plenty of quality of their own. Shane O'Brien is expected to spearhead the attack, while former Limerick star Graeme Mulcahy offers valuable experience and quality for manager James Hickey.
The Cratloe native will be hoping his side can spring an early surprise against the defending champions after losing to them in the last four in 2025.

Friday evening's action features another intriguing repeat of a semi-final, as Doon take on Ballybrown. Guided for a third season by Derek McGrath, recently appointed Wexford senior hurling manager, Doon will look to build on recent progress.
Inter-county stars Adam English and Darragh O'Donovan are set to be central to their ambitions once again. Eddie Stokes, Cian O'Donovan and Dean Coleman are others who will have an impact.
Ballybrown's challenge will largely revolve around the form of Aidan O'Connor, who finished as Limerick's leading scorer this season and remains one of the county's most dangerous forwards. The return of Colin and James Coughlan from county duty strengthens an experienced defence as they rejoin Kevin Lally's panel.
The final Group One fixture on Saturday evening sees neighbours Monaleen and Ahane renew acquaintances in championship action for the first time since 2019. Ahane will look to Morrissey brothers, Dan and Tom, to drive their challenge, while Jack Cosgrove, Conor Ryan and John O'Connor are also expected to make significant contributions for John Meskell's side.
Monaleen enter the campaign under new manager Ken Dunne, who succeeds fellow Toomevara clubman Eoin Brislane after a successful four seasons in charge. Limerick panellists Darragh Langan, Donnacha Ó Dálaigh, Matthew Fitzgerald and Joe Fitzgerald will all be pivotal, while promising under-20 talent Dara Ferland is one to watch.
Group Two promises plenty of drama as former champions Patrickswell begin their campaign against Newcastle West. Following the disappointment of relegation between groups last season, Aaron Gillane, Diarmaid Byrnes and Limerick captain Cian Lynch will be eager to lead the Well back into contention.
For Newcastle West, the clash represents a historic occasion as it will be the clubs' first championship meeting with Patrickswell since 1976. After adapting well to senior hurling last season, recording three draws, the Magpies will be targeting a breakthrough victory. Centre-back Ethan Hurley, Bryan Nix and Eoin Hurley are among those expected to play leading roles.
Elsewhere, Mungret St Paul's face Kildimo Pallaskenry in a contest that could prove crucial in the race for a quarter-final place. Kyle Hayes returns as a key figure for Kildimo Pallaskenry after injury curtailed his 2025 season, while Tony and Peter McCarthy, Davy Fitzgerald and Cathal Downes provide additional quality.
Mungret St Paul's, meanwhile, will look to influential performers Fintan Fitzgerald, Brian O'Meara, Niall Mulcahy and Barry Duff to make the difference. Brian Begley and coach Pat Mulcahy, of Cork, are at the helm.
The final fixture sees newly promoted Garryspillane take on Adare at the TUS Gaelic Grounds. The Bouncers can call on All-Ireland winners Hugh Flanagan and John English, with Dylan O'Shea anchoring the defence. Adare, managed by Mark Foley, are expected to be without the injured Declan Hannon, but with Jody Hannon, John Fitzgibbon and Patrick Kearney available, they remain capable of building on last season's quarter-final appearance.
