After looking decidedly off-colour on Saturday and dependent on goals to get them a second bite of the cherry, Scoil Mhuire Carrick-on-Suir led from pillar to post in Thursday's replay in SETU Carlow to collect the Allianz Mary Moran Cup for the first time.
Kilkenny minor vice-captain Grace Farrell emerged as player of the match, her accuracy during the second and fourth quarters edging her team over the line with great support from Ruby Norris.
The Carrick defence was caught out badly for the first Presentation goal while the second was a shot from 40 metres that went all the way to the net. Nevertheless the team was able to absorb both hits and lead at the break. They forced the dangerous Emma McCarthy to play further out the field as the game progressed, foraging for possession with Isabella Canning and that of course curbed the goal threat posed by Presentation Wexford.
Scoil Mhuire set their stall out early and took a lead of 0-4 to 0-1 by the midway point of the first half. Moya Egan and Mikedas Hart exchanged points to start the scoring before Ruby Norris with two scores and Grace Farrell opened a gap.
A long delivery from Isabella Canning then caught the Carrick defence napping and Cara O’Shaughnessy stole in for an easy goal. However Scoil Mhuire responded well with points each from Emily Cooney, Molly Quinn and Farrell (45) over the next seven minutes.
Then came the Canning goal from distance, but Carrick kept the pressure on and Farrell pointed twice from frees. At the other end goalie Rachel Tennyson pulled off an excellent save to deny a third goal, but Emma McCarthy tapped over for a half-time score of 0-9 to 2-2.
McCarthy’s free in the 36th minute was the only score of the third quarter as Presentation applied plenty of pressure with little return. Bláthanid Keane started the final quarter with an inspirational run and score for Carrick.
Although Isabella Canning responded with a point in the 51st minute, that would be Presentation’s final score and Carrick closed the game out at the back, while two frees from Farrell pushed them into the lead.
Her final score, when she took a pass from Ruby Norris, forced Wexford to go for goal. They didn’t manage to get close and Carrick held out for a first title.
