A bizarre penalty shoot-out incident has compelled a Tipperary club to contest the outcome of their county quarter-final.
Moyne-Templetuohy are appealing their defeat to Solohead in their junior B hurling game in Drombane last Saturday after they were only permitted to take four penalties while their opponents were permitted five.
After the game finished 1-22 apiece following extra-time it is understood Moyne-Templetuohy put down the wrong number of the player they wanted on their registered list and a change was not granted by the referee.
As both teams were deemed to have scored one penalty in the regular phase of the shoot-out, Solohead one from five and Moyne-Templetuohy one from four, it went into sudden death where Solohead came out on top.
It is understood the player who Moyne-Templetuohy wished to strike the penalty was on the field at the extra-time, which is a requirement in a penalty shoot-out.
Match regulations indicate that the only means of altering one of the registered five penalty takers other than the goalkeeper is if one of them is sent off during the shoot-out.
He can be replaced by a player who was on the field at the end of extra-time and the change is approved by the referee. A goalkeeper who is injured can also be replaced.
Solohead are due to join Carrick Swans, Silvermines and Thurles Sarsfields in the semi-finals of the Tim Maher Cup.
Meanwhile, Andy Moran’s first game in charge of Mayo in 2026 will come against Sligo in the FBD Connacht League on January 3/4. That same weekend, Galway will meet London and Roscommon clash with Leitrim.
On January 9/10, Leitrim meet Galway, London are pitted against Sligo while Mayo and Roscommon face off, Moran sharing the sideline with new Rossies boss Mark Dowd, who coached him in Ballaghaderreen in 2012.
The top two teams will meet in a final on January 17/18 with the next best sides paired in a shield final and the fifth and sixth-placed counties competing in a shield decider.
With 26 players on each panel, all are permitted to play, although once substituted, a player shall not be allowed to return to the game unless as a blood or head injury substitute. A maximum of six substitutes is allowed during the second half of a given game.
There are growing indications that Cillian O’Connor will be available for Mayo this coming season having taken a sabbatical in 2025.
In August, Moran had expressed his hopes that the 33-year-old would return to inter-county action.
