Slaughtneil have appealed the outcome of their Derry SFC semi-final defeat to Newbridge on Sunday.

The club are understood to be contesting it on the grounds that their last score by Shane McGuigan should have been worth two points instead of one.

Trailing by one, Newbridge won a free from the resultant kick-out. It was brought forward as the referee adjudged Brendan Rogers had deliberately delayed the play, and the placed ball was converted for two points by Conor Doherty, winning the game for the Seán O’Leary’s men.

Defending champions Newbridge are due to face O’Donovan Rossa, Magherafelt in the final this Sunday. The chances of Slaughtneil winning their appeal on the grounds of the McGuigan score being worth twice as much as it was awarded appear remote.

Last month, Hollymount-Carramore were unsuccessful in appealing the result of their Mayo intermediate group draw with Kilmaine, despite a two-point score erroneously being awarded instead of one to Kilmaine.

Both the Mayo GAA hearings committee and Connacht appeals body quashed their case, adjudging as the referee had signalled the score as a two-point effort he recorded the score correctly in accordance with the rulebook.

In September, Croke Park reminded counties that referees failing to allow a score is not grounds for contest. “In light of queries received (in recent days) relating to potential objections to scores being awarded or not awarded in games which affect the outcome of the game, the Rules Advisory Committee would like to draw attention to the provisions of Rule 7.5, particularly 7.5 (n) (ii) regarding decision to an incorrectly recorded scored as distinct from the decision of the referee to allow or disallow a score: a Competition Control Committee must make decisions in accordance with the provisions of Rule 7.5”.
