Waterford SHC: Walsh leads Fourmilewater fightback
Fourmilewater's Sean Walsh scored seven points from play to help his side back from a 10 point deficit into a three point win.
Déise attacker Sean Walsh played a starring role as Fourmilewater turned a 10 point deficit into a three point win against Abbeyside/Ballinacourty under the Saturday night lights of Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field (0-27 to 3-15). The full forward shot seven points from play to send his team into the quarter finals and dump last year’s runners-up into the relegation play-offs.
"Sean brought his county form back into the club," manager Richard O'Keeffe remarked afterwards. "He was away in America for two months and it was probably what he needed to rest and recuperate. On his day, he's unplayable really."
When a Charlie Treen goal gave Abbeyside a 2-13 to 0-9 lead on 33 minutes, it looked to be lights out for Fourmile. Incredibly, the Ballymacarbry men outscored their opponents by 18 points to 1-2 from there to the finish with wind assistance.
Walsh went toe to toe with Brian Looby on the edge of the square and the big man came out on top with seven points from eleven attempts at the posts. Three-time All Star Jamie Barron was also a big player in this stunning turnaround with five from play. Ciaran Walsh scored three in the second half while substitute Aaron Ryan chipped in with the same tally. Oisin Walsh and Tom Barron also thundered into the game after the break.
Waterford forward Michael Kiely struck 1-2 inside two minutes for Abbeyside and finished the night with 2-5. County panellist Charlie Treen totalled 1-5. Déise defender Conor Prunty only came on with eight minutes left due to injury.
Clonea survived a chaotic finish to emerge 2-15 to 1-17 winners over Dungarvan in the curtain raiser. Dungarvan players and mentors surrounded referee Seaghan Walsh at full time as a late penalty appeal went against the boys in blue. Replays showed that Clonea goalkeeper Paudie Hunt made a fair tackle on Joe Duggan four minutes into injury time.
Full forward James Power was Clonea's talisman with a goal in each half and 2-1 in total. Kieran Power, back from a hand injury, swept across the defence. Billy Power nailed two late frees and made a goal saving interception at the death.
Waterford front man Patrick Curran scored 1-12 (1-3 from play) in one of his finest hours for Dungarvan. Wing back Eddie Burke also impressed with two long range points.
An injury time point from Mark Fitzgerald and an injury time save from Eddy Lynch saw Passage prevail 1-18 to 2-12 against Brickey Rangers in Kill. Rory Jacob netted for the 2013 champions early in the second half but two Tom O'Connell goals for Brickeys set up a grandstand finish.
Reuben Halloran hit 10 points as De La Salle defeated Ferrybank 0-22 to 0-9 in Walsh Park. Ferrybank only managed one second half point.
