Six astounding Austin Gleeson points (five from play) saw Mount Sion easily overcome Fourmilewater at Carrickbeg on Sunday (1-25 to 0-19) and make it five wins from five in the Waterford SHC.
Five of those six white flags came from inside his own half of the field! The free scoring centre back struck two first half screamers from the Sion 45.
"Delighted with his leadership," manager Jamie O'Meara said afterwards. "It's great to see him back. I still think Austin has a year or two in him at county level."
Adam Regan fired 1-5 for the Monastery side (1-3 from play) including a goal two minutes into the second half which burst the bottom corner of the net. Sion are straight through to the quarter finals as Group A winners. Evan Spelman (0-7) and Jamie Barron (0-3) were best for a flat Fourmilewater outfit. They will meet Abbeyside/Ballinacourty in the preliminary quarter finals next weekend.
Lismore secured their quarter final place with a 2-20 to 0-14 win over Dungarvan at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field. Jack Prendergast and Ben Cummins netted late goals as the black and amber finished runners-up in Group A. County men Patrick Curran and Darragh Lyons didn't line out for Dungarvan.
A fantastic first half goal by Déise defender Mark Fitzgerald powered Passage to 3-19 to 0-12 victory against Ferrybank at a rainy Walsh Park. Thomas Carey (penalty) and Mike Hutchinson added second half goals for Vinny Keane's outfit.
Peter Hogan hit 2-3 from play as 12-in-a-row chasing Ballygunner beat Roanmore 3-24 to 0-15 in Walsh Park on Saturday night. Both sides were already safely through to the quarters.
The team on a 63 match unbeaten run in Waterford have won their five group games by a whopping total of 98 points! Corner forward Eoin Cuddihy also impressed with 1-5. The man of the match in last year's county U20 final has been the star of the group stages with a personal tally of 4-18 for Jason Ryan's men. Patrick Fitzgerald got two points in his first start of the 2025 championship. Pauric Mahony has yet to make an appearance for the Gunners. Roanmore top scorer Gavin O'Brien fired a first half penalty right and wide.
Two Michael Kiely goals fired last year's runners-up Abbeyside/Ballinacourty to their first win of the campaign against Brickey Rangers (3-21 to 0-13). Substitute Eoin Kiely also raised a green flag for Benji Whelan's charges. The Villagers couldn't call on Conor Prunty or Neil Montgomery due to injury.
Goals in either half from Thomas Douglas and Cormac Dawson saw De La Salle run out 2-23 to 1-12 victors over Clonea. Reuben Halloran accounted for 10 points as 11 players scored from play for Ian Flynn's side. Jake Dillon dictated the game from centre back on his return to the team. Clonea took the field without their regular number six Kieran Power due to a hand injury.
