Mayo GAA has apologised to Kevin McStay for the much-criticised statement which announced the then senior manager's departure.

The June 25th release stated that McStay was ‘relieved of his duties’.

“The manner and tone of the original communication didn’t adequately reflect the deep respect and appreciation we hold for Kevin," county vice-chairman Michael Diskin told a board meeting on Monday night.

He added that they "express clearly and unreservedly that it was never the intention of the Executive to cause offence. For this, we offer our heartfelt apologies.”

Diskin said the Connacht side aim to have a senior manager in place by no later than the third week of the Mayo club championships, which are slated to begin in the middle of August.

Mayo are also searching for minor and U-20 managers as Peadar Gardiner and David Heaney and Tom Reilly stepped down.

“I want to sincerely thank David and Tom and their entire backroom team for the positive impact they’ve had on so many young GAA players in the county," Mayo GAA chief Seamus Tuohy said of the minor managers' efforts.
"I have no doubt their coaching influence over the past two years will continue to benefit these young players with their clubs in the months ahead."
