Dessie Farrell says Michael Fitzsimons is unlikely to return to the Dublin fold.

Speaking after the 0-20 to 0-16 defeat to Donegal in Ballybofey, the Dubs boss said they were preparing for life without the nine-time All-Ireland winner.

"It's unlikely Mike will be back with us," Farrell told TG4. "He's had a long, long season when you combine the intercounty and the great one that Cuala had.

"And obviously he's a busy man in his profession as well, everyone knows that so it's very unlikely we'll have Mick back.

"He's been a brilliant servant and we'll miss him greatly but that seems to be the situation at the minute."

Farrell, who last week indicated that Stephen Cluxton would return, continued: "Himself and James McCarthy were senior men. Two fabulous ambassadors for Dublin GAA over the years.

"They led the charge and the education they've given to the rest of the players and set the standards that have been pretty immense, so a huge loss to us.

"But that's a great opportunity for others and we're already seeing a different face to this Dublin team.

"An identity is starting to emerge. The experience may not be there but hopefully the heart and desire will be."
