De La Salle College, Waterford eased their way into the knockout stage of the TUS Dr Harty Cup in the Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Wednesday with a massive 20 points to spare over St Colmans’s College, Fermoy, and no fewer than 10 scorers on the scoresheet.
In this three-team Group 5, they have already defeated Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG by 15 points, so the final group game in a fortnight between St Colmans’s College and the AG will determine who will fill second place.
St Colman’s College were playing their first game in this competition and they were caught cold as Kevin Moran’s side set about their business from the throw-in.
Twenty-one seconds was all it took Philip Power to split the posts. A minute later Adam Regan set up Conor Tobin for the first goal. They had 1-4 on the board before St Colman’s main threat Fionn Lardner opened their account from a free in the seventh minute.
Lardner would tally 11 of their total.
Likewise, Mark Hartley was unerring in his placed ball efforts for De La Salle College (0-10 overall).
A second goal for De La Salle was banged home by Regan in the 13th minute - set up by Power, and even at this early stage it was apparent it was going to be a long afternoon for Colm Spillane and his backroom team.
When Ollie Fives netted 10 minutes from the break - Regan the supplier - it was a case of how much they would win by, 3-8 to 0-4 at this juncture.
By the half-way stage they were 3-14 to 0-6 ahead. As well, they shot nine wides.
To their credit, St Colman’s College made four substitutions and were more competitive in the second half. Lardner (2) and Jack Counihan landed the first three points, but it wasn’t long before De La Salle cancelled them out.
The teams continued to trade white flags until three minutes from time when Regan finished his second goal after Tobin did the necessary groundwork.
On the evidence of what we’ve seen thus far, De La Salle College will certainly have a say in this competition, and being able to bring on Kilkenny minor Robbie Doherty, who is recovering from injury, is another obvious plus.
