Harty Cup Group A: Christian Brothers College (Cork) 1-19 Rice College (Ennis) 0-12

A second victory of the campaign for Christians, coupled with a share of the spoils in the other Group A fixture, sees the Cork school secure knockout involvement with a round to spare.

Now whether Christians head straight to the last eight of the Harty Cup or must negotiate a pre-Christmas preliminary quarter-final will be determined by their final group outing against Hospital’s John the Baptist Community School.

But irrespective of how that fixture fares out, to be two from two and already assured of group progression with a round still to run is as decent a start to the Harty season as managers Tony Wall and Traolach Martin could jave asked for.

While comfortable winners in the end, Christians made hard work of this game early doors. Dominance in possession did not translate to scoreboard dominance.

By the 13th minute, the Sidney Hill students had clocked seven wides, had twice hit the post, and also seen a James Murray goal shot superbly saved by Rice College ‘keeper Daniel Meehan. Murray would depart proceedings injured shortly after, joining fellow inside forward Conor McCarthy on the sideline as an early casualty.

And when Darren Moroney and Pádraic O’Donovan sniped three-in-a-row for Conor Cleary’s Rice College, the Ennis students somehow found themselves level at 0-4 apiece on 20 minutes.

Clearly annoyed with failing up to this juncture to make their superiority count, Christians rattled off a four-in-a-row through Eoghan O’Shea, Michael Quill, and sub Cillian Murray to command an 0-8 to 0-5 interval advantage. It should have been so much greater. Nine first-half wides, two further short, and the earlier mentioned off-the-post and saved green flag efforts spoke of significant waste.

Pádraic O’Donovan, who accounted for all bar one of Rice College’s dozen white flags, brought his side within two on 37 minutes. That was as close as they came. Christians would proceed to outgun their opponents 1-9 to 0-4.

Michael Brosnan fired in the goal on 40 minutes. The Glen Rovers half-forward was immense. He tallied 1-5 in total. Each one from play. Eoghan O’Shea swelled his tally to 0-9, four of those from play. Sub Cillian Murray will contend for a starting spot against Hospital after finishing with three from play.

So far so decent for Christians and their Harty endeavours.
