Brian Fenton has described retiring teammate James McCarthy as "the greatest Dublin player we will ever see".
The Ballymun Kickhams man announced his retirement from inter-county football on Monday. Alongside Stephen Cluxton and Michael Fitzsimons, McCarthy earned a record-breaking ninth All-Ireland senior football title in 2023.
He also won five All-Star awards and 13 Leinster titles during an incredible career.
Another Dublin teammate Ciarán Kilkenny posted: "Warrior, champion, clutch, elite runner, courage, bravery, and the best teammate/friend. Always had your back, what a man! Won’t be the same without him. Our Warhorse."
While former Dublin star Michael Darragh MacAuley simply said: "Pure warrior, no bullshit."
Former Dublin manager Paul Caffrey told the Daily Mirror that there has never been a player "so beloved by Dublin supporters".

Ex-Donegal star Eamon McGee summed up opponents' impressions of McCarthy in a tweet: "Every GAA player profile Q&A over the last 15 years: Favourite movie = Shawshank Redemption, Player you’d most like to take in on a transfer = James McCarthy."
In his retirement statement, McCarthy said it had not been an easy decision to call time now.
"I have been very fortunate to be involved in a golden period for Dublin GAA and I have played with the most incredible group of players. It really has been some of the best days of my life and I have memories to last a lifetime. The loyalty and friendship we have built is something I will always be thankful for. To the Dublin fans thank you for the support of the team throughout the years. Walking around Croke park and passing Hill 16 is a memory that I will never forget."
Dublin County Board Chairman Mick Seavers paid tribute to McCarthy's "incredible contribution" to GAA in the capital.
“On behalf of the Dublin County Board, I would like to congratulate James on his incredible contribution to the success of Dublin GAA during his playing career.
“James steps away as one of the most decorated and inspirational footballers ever to play the game.
“We thank James for his dedication to the blue jersey and we wish him and his family every happiness going forward.”
