O’Shea haul gets CBC off to flier against Doon in the Harty Cup

Harty Cup: Christian Brothers College, Cork 0-19 Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa, Doon 0-9

Ten points from corner-forward Eoghan O’Shea ensured Christian Brothers College got off to a positive start in Group 1 of the Dr Harty Cup in Glenroe on Wednesday, the tie was a repeat of last year’s opening day fixture which the Cork side won by three points.

In a contest that was put back half an hour after the Christian’s bus broke down, there was never any doubt about the result once they got into their stride and struck seven points without reply on the approach to half time, which meant an advantage of six at the break.

Sarsfields duo Jack Huggins and Rory Higgins led from the back, and along with midfielders Jack Hegarty and Michael Quill, all four were on the scoresheet.

Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa stayed in the hunt, but the story could have been so much better had they been able to convert from placed balls after they tried several different players, and they also had a lot of shots that dropped short.

By contrast, the accuracy of O’Shea was a factor.

Following an even opening quarter, the Sidney Hill school piled on the pressure with a run of points from Higgins, O’Shea (4), Quill, Hegarty and Ben Mayer between the 12th and 26th minute.

Following a good star that yielded scores from Robbie McGrath and Darragh Coughlan, Doon went 19 minutes without a score, consequently they went to dressing-room 0-10 to 0-4 in arrears.

They needed a quick start to the second half, but they were outscored five points to two within 10 minutes, the pick of the Cork points from Michael T Brosnan close to the right sideline.

Diarmuid Crowe took over the free-taking for Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa to good effect and one certainly couldn’t fault his team for effort where their captain Seán McDonnell worked tirelessly.

Christians closed with four O’Shea points - three from placed balls.
