Boherbue come from behind to stun Adrigole with late winner

Boherbue produced a sensational finish to edge out a shell-shocked Adrigole in the McCarthy Insurance Group Cork intermediate A FC semi-final in Cill na Martra on Saturday. Trailing by six points and in serious bother with less than 10 minutes of normal time remaining, they kicked 1-4 without reply to set up a final meeting with Glanmire.
It was a barely believable ending.
David O’Connor sent over a point from play and followed with a free to reduce the gap to four. Then, in the 59th minute Daniel Buckley’s high delivery was met by the evergreen John Corkery, the full-forward’s shot hit off one post before going into the net off the other.
And with referee Niall Hayes signalling at least five minutes of additional time, the Duhallow side were on a roll. With the clock in the red David O’Connor brought his tally to six to draw the teams level as extra-time looked a certainty.
But they had another little bit left in the tank, and Liam Moynihan’s point deep in stoppage proved to be the winning score.
Jubilation and heartbreak all in one.
Adrigole, against the wind, were superb.
Connie O’Shea was their extra defender, as they went 0-3 to 0-2 up inside the first quarter and when they added points from Gerard O’Shea, wing-back Darragh O’Sullivan and an excellent Neil O’Sullivan free off the ground from a tricky angle 40 metres out, they opened up an interval advantage of 0-6 to 0-3.
Boherbue had just one point from play courtesy of Corkery in a wind-assisted half. They went without scoring between Corkery’s point in the 12th minute and a David O’Connor free in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage.
Adrigole, shorn of cruciate victim Jason Harrington, showed their intent straight from the restart. Cian O’Shea converted a free, while Seanie O’Sullivan and his brother Ben scored from play.
O’Shea put them 0-11 to 0-5 clear in the 50th minute.
The only worry was their wide count which grew from two in the first half to nine in the second half.
And it did come back to haunt them.
So, Glanmire and Boherbue will renew acquaintances after they met in the group stage with a single-point victory going to the Riverstown club.
Huge credit to Boherbue, it was a victory achieved without Kevin Cremin (hamstring) and they also lost Pa Daly to injury just before half-time.
