In the space of just over a fortnight, Colin Fennelly will have flown 32 hours to play a couple of club hurling games with Ballyhale Shamrocks. By next weekend, Castlelyons' Anthony Spillane will have covered even more ground in the same time.

Long haul trekking no longer unique 

When Tony Griffin spent four years as a student in Canada in the 2000s, regularly travelling home from Novia Scotia to play for Clare and Ballyea, the monetary challenge was always far greater when it came to Ballyea. The club would somehow fund the flights, whatever way they could. On one occasion, they reached out to the parish with a church gate collection, sure in the knowledge that their neighbours and parishioners would recognise a good cause.
