Father and son came up against each other in the Fraher Field sunshine on Saturday evening as Dungarvan defender Darragh Lyons helped his club to a 0-18 to 0-15 win over a Fourmilewater team managed by his dad Derek.
Darragh returned from America to line out at centre back for the Blues and made a crucial goal line clearance from Ciaran Walsh with two minutes left. Derek congratulated his son when they met in the middle of the field afterwards.
In a scrappy encounter, full of frees and injuries, nine Michael Kiely placed balls and telling contributions from Cathal Curran (0-3) and Tristan Loftus (0-2) got Dungarvan over the line. Curran man marked Jamie Barron throughout.
The three-time All Star saw a last gasp strike at goal blocked down by Jack Lacey. The Ballymacarbry men were guilty of thirteen wides. Fourmile lost top scorer Aaron Ryan to injury after just 21 minutes and he was stretchered away in an ambulance after the game.
Six second-half frees from Kiely left Dungarvan, managed by former Cork star Eoin Cadogan, 15-11 ahead after 54 minutes. Two Evan Spellman frees and Tholom Guiry's second from play narrowed the gap to one entering six added minutes. Patrick Curran then fended off four defenders and delivered his first point of the evening.
With Kiely off the field injured, Cathal Curran nailed a long distance free before Eoin O'Callaghan wrapped up the win. A quarter final clash with next-door neighbours Abbeyside awaits next weekend.
2023 Premier Intermediate champions Ferrybank fought back from nine points down to beat Clonea in a thriller at Walsh Park (2-23 to 1-24). Former Waterford panellist Mark O'Brien belted over thirteen points (ten frees) as the boys in green caused the first shock of the championship.
Clonea led 1-16 to 0-11 at the break. Jason Gleeson crashed home a close range free in the fifth minute while Billy Power finished the afternoon on eleven points. Clonea failed to capitalise on four more goal chances however.
Robbie Carew whipped to the net a minute into the second half to start the Ferrybank comeback. MJ Sutton then made a mighty fetch from a puckout on 36 minutes and rattled the roof of the net. Goalkeeper Cormac O'Driscoll saved a close range shot from James Power before Mark O'Brien sealed victory with an injury time free.
"We watched a movie together last night, 14 Peaks," O'Brien told Clubber TV afterwards.
"We took that mantra from the film into it. Belief. We're going to do this. It's a big step up for us but we believed all week we were going to win. We're not here to make up the numbers."
Three points from Waterford defender Mark Fitzgerald helped Passage to a nail biting 0-20 to 1-15 victory over Lismore. Fitzgerald tracked county team mate Jack Prendergast and emerged with the sliotar in injury time when Lismore threatened a match winning goal.
Long serving Passage netminder Eddy Lynch pulled off a vital save from Ben O'Sullivan while Callum O'Neill and Kevin Cullinane contained Maurice Shanahan and Ben O'Sullivan.
Thomas Carey (0-6) and Mikey Cummins (0-3) led the way up front while 2013 county medallist Owen Connors and wing back Gary Cullinane contributed two points each in the second half.
Jack Prendergast limped off for Lismore with eight minutes left. He set up Paudie Prendergast for a goal on 25 minutes.
Eleven in a row chasing Ballygunner will meet De La Salle next weekend in a repeat of last year's county final.
