Kerry SFL: Micheál Burns savouring return to Dr Crokes club duties
Dr Crokes' Micheal Burns.
Dr Crokes and Laune Rangers remain unbeaten at the top of Kerry's SFL Division One table with five wins from five. While Dr Crokes' resurrecton is hardly surprising, the Killorglin side continue to pull up trees on their return from the second division.
Crokes proved too strong for East Kerry rivals Glenflesk, 2-16 to 2-6, in a game that marred by a serious looking injury to Glenflesk full forward and top scorer Patrick Darcy. Two early points from Micheal Burns and one each from Cian McMahon and Mark O’Shea saw Crokes race 0-4 to no score but Glenflesk got back in the game briefly when Darcy was taken down for the penalty and it was converted. However, Dr Crokes were awarded a penalty of their own in the 18th minute that Daithi Casey netted to give them a 1-11 to 1-2 half time lead. Ex-Kerry forward Micheal Burns s clearly enjoying his return to club duties with 0-6 in the half and it got better when he found the Glenflesk net early in the second half to put Crokes into an unassailable 2-14 to 1-4 lad.
Laune Rangers had to stage a final quarter comeback to see off the challenge of Spa, 2-11 to 2-9. Gearoid Hassett grabbed an early goal for Killorglin but Spa responded well with a David Spillane goal but points from Daire Cleary, Patrick Daly and Fiachra Clifford had Laune Rangers 1-8 to 1-4 in front at the break. However Spa enjoyed a decent third quarter with two Evan Cronin points and Cian Tobin goal to hit the front. Two more Spa points and Laune Rangers 2-8 to 1-8 behind but Rangers finished the stronger with a John Burke goal from play proving the decisive score.
Killarney Legion was fortunate to collect their second win of the campaign, beating Milltown/Castlemaine 0-12 to 0-11 on Saturday. It was very nearly a flashback to the previous weekend for Legion when they conceded a late goal to Kilcummin. This time they were three up again (0-12 to 0-9) entering four minutes of injury-time. Two Eanna O’Connor frees put the minimum between the sides and even though Legion appeared to have evaded a chance at an equaliser for the hosts, some afters led to a reversal of a Legion free and a throw-ball by referee Brian Fleming. Milltown/Castlemaine won that throw ball and Gavin McKenna tried his luck from distance but it went wide to the sound of the final whistle and Legion's relief.
Kerins O’Rahilly’s are still without a point along - as are Dingle - at the foot of the table with the Tralee side losing a tough one to Rathmore 2-12 to 0-15. O’Rahillys welcomed Jack Savage but were without the suspended Jake Foley. Rathmore led 2-7 to 0-6 at half time with the goals from Daragh Nagle and John Moynihan while James Darmody scored 0-6.
Ballymacelligott move up to seven points following a big win away over Dingle on a 4-9 to 0-8 scoreline with goals from Brian Lonergan, an Aidan Breen penalty, Sean Rice and the fourth from Vinny Horan.
Kilcummin were ran close by an improving An Ghaeltacht side by a single point, having lead 1-8 to 1-4 at the interval with Chris O’Leary getting the Kilcummin goal from a penalty. Gary and Philip O’Leary along with Paul and Mark O’Shea were also on the scoreboard for Kilcummin while it was Philip O’Leary who kicked the winning point in the second minute of added time.
