Pat Ryan’s named team for Saturday’s Division 1A clash with Cork shows five changes from the side that began last Sunday’s defeat to Clare.
Ciarán Joyce, Cormac O’Brien, Brian Roche, Eoin Carey and Brian Hayes make way for the Downey brothers Eoin and Robert, Tim O’Mahony, Conor O’Callaghan and Luke Meade.
O’Mahony and Robert Downey are set to form a new half-back line flanking Niall O’Leary in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh as Tommy O’Connell moves to midfield where he forms one part of pairing with O’Callaghan.
Joyce, O’Brien and Hayes are not in the matchday 26 at present with Roche and Carey named among the substitutes where Mark Coleman returns. However, Darragh Fitzgibbon is set to miss out.
With the exception of Meade for Hayes, the same attacking sextet that began the match in Cusack Park are retained.
Speaking after last Sunday’s game in Ennis, Ryan indicated Joyce and O’Brien would be assessed after their Fitzgibbon Cup games. Joyce lined out for MTU Cork in Wednesday’s quarter-final defeat to University of Galway while O’Brien featured in UCC’s loss to UL.
Brion Saunderson, Ger Millerick, Eoin and Robert Downey, Shane Barrett, Hayes, Cathal McCarthy and Robbie Cotter were also involved for UCC.
Meanwhile, Wicklow manager Oisín McConville has been suspended for four weeks for using “abusive language towards a referee” in last Sunday’s Allianz Division 3 defeat to Sligo.
McConville was reported by match official Kieran Eannetta in Markievicz Park and proposed a penalty, which he contested in front of the Central Hearings Committee (CHC) last night.
However, the charge was upheld by the body and he will be suspended for four weeks from last weekend. McConville has the option of bringing his case to the Central Appeals Committee but as things stand the 2002 All-Ireland SFC winner is set to miss Wicklow’s games against Westmeath and Clare.
The CHC found Laois hurler Willie Dunphy’s red card for “striking with hurley with force” against Down in last Sunday’s Division 2A opening game was not proven.
However, they adjudged he had acted dangerously to an opponent and therefore served him with a one-match ban.
Similarly, Tyrone hurler Lorcan Devlin’s dismissal against Derry in their Division 2B clash was regraded and he was also handed a one-game suspension.
However, Devlin’s team-mate Joseph McToal’s red card for “behaving in any way which is dangerous to an opponent” was struck out and no penalty was imposed.
