In the dressingroom after Tipperary lost to Waterford in the 2021 All-Ireland quarter-final, no grand announcements were made, no retirements were declared, from players or management. Yet it still felt like the end of an era. It was.

Most people in the room were certain it was Brendan Maher’s last time in a Tipp jersey. Maher had struggled with an ankle injury earlier in the season and his form never recovered. Maher gave it everything he had but he had made up his mind from the outset of that 2021 season that it would be his last.
