Matthew Twomey pressed send at 12 noon on Monday week last. The parting mail to his players was one he knew he’d be writing as far back as March of this season. Not even a 19-point All-Ireland final win or the reality that there are “a few more” O’Duffy Cups in this Cork group led to a moment of wavering.

His decision to step down 29 days after Cork swatted Waterford aside to return to camogie’s summit was exclusively personal. It bore no reflection on the players, his backroom team, or the county board.
