Kerry's Scanlon retires from inter-county football
Seamus Scanlon has played his last game of senior inter-county football for Kerry and will not be part of Eamonn Fitzmaurice's Kingdom panel next season.
The Kerry County Board have confirmed today that midfielder Scanlon, who played alongside Darragh Ó Sé in the Kingdom's 2007 and 2009 All-Ireland final wins, has decided to call time on his inter-county career.
Troubled by injury in recent seasons, Scanlon made five appearances during the 2012 Allianz League and started against Cork in the Munster SFC semi-final defeat.
But Bryan Sheehan and Anthony Maher were paired together in centre-field for the remainder of Kerry's Championship run, with the 31-year-old Currow clubman unable to break back into the side.
Scanlon's retirement comes just over 10 years after he made his SFC bow for Kerry against Limerick, following steady progress at minor and Under-21 levels. His honours list includes a prized All-Star award from the 2009 season.
Kerry GAA Chairman Patrick O'Sullivan thanked Scanlon sincerely for 'all his hard work and years of commitment to Kerry at every age'.
"On behalf on all Kingdom supporters, I wish Seamus well in the future and great success with his club Currow and divisional side St. Kieran's," he said.
Scanlon played in midfield and scored a point for St. Kieran's in their 4-5 to 0-14 Kerry SFC semi-final loss to Dingle last Sunday afternoon.
