Teddy McCarthy has quit as Laois senior hurling manager just twelve months into a three-year term.

McCarthy feels he is unable to give the 'necessary commitment' to the role, given his own work schedule and the time taken in travelling back and forth for training and matches.

The O'Moore men suffered relegation from Division 1B of the Allianz League this season, and lost heavily to Dublin and Limerick in the Leinster and All-Ireland Championships respectively.

A statement posted on the Laois GAA website read: "In having worked in the privileged position for just the one season and after considering his own work schedule and the time and travel distance involved for at least three to four nights a week, Teddy McCarthy has found that he is just unable to give the necessary and required commitment at this present time.

"He would like to thank Laois GAA for affording him the opportunity to manage their senior hurling team and wishes them every success in the future."

A dual All-Ireland winner with Cork, the Bandon native took the Laois reins last year from Brendan Fennelly who departed following an embarrassing 34-point defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland qualifiers.

In a statistic that underlines the unrest and turbulent times that Laois hurling has endured at inter-county level, McCarthy was the fifth manager appointed in the space of seven years.

However, he was unable to turn things around for them in 2012 and the next man in will have some rebuilding to do as they look to bounce back from relegation in the spring.
